Penang’s vital relationship with water inspired the proposal as a symbolic relationship embodied through the concept of ‘Rhythmic Waves’ – the different rhythms of daily life from slowing down and tuning into the serene pace of nature, to the hustle and bustle of the heart of Penang’s identity. With 15km of shoreline diversification the design of the south coast aimed at symbolising the resilient, productive and leisure future of the island. Robust landscape layers were proposed for the design ideas competition with nature-based shoreline protection, bio-engineered living breakwaters with shellfish and shore stabilising vegetation to protect the life and safety of the new 4,500-acre Alunan Penang South Islands.
